Ensemble-playing is the heart of AMPA Jazz. Every student plays in at least two ensembles. Playing in various styles and coached by expert teachers, students perform on external and renowned stages exclusively. Ensembles work very independently and are responsible for practical matters such as: contact with venues, delivering PR material, technical material, stageplan etc.

Playground is a unique AMPA Jazz format! Playing together (students ánd teachers) and thus working on important elements of music making and getting acquainted with repertoire remains the core characteristic of Playground sessions taking place every Thursday in the Refter hall of Fontys Fine & Performing Arts.

AMPA Jazz closely collaborates with Paradox (one of the major jazzvenues in Holland) on masterclasses and performances. Additionally, all main subject exams take place in Paradox. During the exams, each student gives a mini-concert of 20 minutes for a live audience. The process is based on our belief that playing on a stage and not a classroom offers a completely different and more valuable experience for Jazz performers.
